The new 2011 Perodua Myvi 1.3 was launched in June 16 with 3 variants: Standard, Premium and Elegance. To further boost the sales of Myvi model, Perodua now launched 2 new variants – the new Myvi SE and Myvi Extreme with 1.5-litre DOHC 16V DVVT engine to all its prospective customers.

The new Myvi 1.5 is marketed with the catchphrase “Lagi Power, Lagi Best”.

Despite the fact that Perodua developed the new Myvi 1.5 at the same time as the current Myvi 1.3 model. However, we think that Perodua have done a great job in styling the car and well responded to their customer requirement and feedback in terms of performance.

The new Myvi SE and Myvi Extreme are priced between RM 50,900 and RM 61,700 depending on the specifications. Both variants offer the choice of 5-speed manual or 4-speed automatic transmission.

Ownership of the 458 Italia starts from RM2 million, and Naza Italia already has 14 names in its order book for the car.

The new Ferrari 458 Italia is powered by a new 4.5 liter V8 engine producing 570 horsepower at a mind-boggling 9,000rpm, and 540Nm of torque at 6,000rpm (over 80% of this available from 3,250rpm onwards), thanks to high-revving, a 12.5:1 compression ratio, and direct injection. The torque numbers are pretty darn high for a normally aspirated of this size, thanks to direct injection and the high compression. Ferrari pointed out that out of the 570 total horses, 5 are gained only at higher speeds thanks to a ram air effect.

Power goes to the rear wheels via a new 7-speed dual clutch F1 gearbox. This combination of a V8, a twin clutch, and a dry weight of 1,380kg takes the car up to 100km/h in 3.4 seconds, and the top speed is set at over 325km/h. For those who even bother, fuel consumption is 13.7 liters per 100km on a combined cycle and Ferrari says this is the best in its segment.

A source revealed that the turbocharged Proton Exora MPV could most probably hit the market by between end 2010 to mid 2011.

The powerplant featured in the Prestige Concept is said to produce up to 270 horsepower, and with a torque figure that is rated at about 350Nm.

Toyota has launched the 2nd generation Toyota Passo in Japan, and it now comes in two ‘body styles’ called the regular Passo and the Passo + Hana which is supposed to be the more stylish and upmarket model with features such as projector headlamps.

In Japan, the new Passo will be available with either a 1.0 liter or a 1.3 liter engine. The 4-speed auto has been phased out – now all models including 4WD versions come with a CVT transmission. The 1.0 liter uses the 1KR-FE that produces 69 PS (51kW) at 6,000rpm and 92Nm of torque at 3,600rpm.

The 1.3 liter engine is the new 1NR-FE which replaces the K3-VE in the previous generation car. The 1NR-FE now has dual variable valve timing on both the intake and exhaust valves. Power output is 95 PS (70kW) at 6,000rpm and 121Nm of torque at 4,000rpm, which is up from the K3-VE’s 86hp (64kW) and 116Nm.

Civic Type R Gets a Facelift

The 2009 Best Global Brands, an annual study carried out by leading brand consultancy Interbrand (in collaboration with Businessweek magazine) shows Toyota still No. 1 among carmakers, followed by Mercedes-Benz and BMW.

Toyota was the highest-ranked auto company among the overall Top 100, positioned at No. 8, two places down from 2008 and 2007. Mercedes-Benz was No. 11 overall in 2008 and had been No. 10 in 2007 but dropped to No. 12 this year. Honda, however, did better, moving from No. 20 in 2008 to No. 18 this year. Hyundai also saw an improvement in overall ranking, going from No. 72 in 2008 to No. 69.

The survey’s summary includes brand values and reflecting the effects of the downturn in the auto industry, the brand values of all the automakers fell. Toyota’s brand value was calculated at US$31.3 billion, 8% down from what it was worth in 2008. Likewise, Mercedes-Benz also had its brand value lowered by 7% to US$23.9 billion. Among the top 10 in the auto sector, Ford Motor Company’s brand value fell the most, by 12% to US$7 billion.

Other auto-related brands among the Top 100 were Harley-Davidson (73), BP (83), Shell (92) and Lexus (96).

For those interested, the Top three Global Brands were Coca-Cola, IBM and Microsoft, respectively, all of which held the same rankings as in 2008. Coca-Cola’s brand value was estimated at US$68.7 billion, over double that of Toyota’s.

The Proton Saga, one of the best-selling models in Malaysia, has a new variant – the SE (Special Edition) which adds a sporty image to the line-up. Unveiled at the FELDA Hari Peneroka 2009 event in Segamat today, the new Saga SE is said to be targeted at younger buyers.

To be priced at around RM43,000 with a manual transmission (around RM45,000 with automatic transmission), it will be available in two exclusive colours - Brilliant Red and Solid White. The Saga SE has a distinctive appearance with its black rooftop and front grille, pronounced front and side skirting, rear lip spoiler, rear skirting with black diffuser as well as a new alloy rim design.

Inside, it gets new interior finishing complete with leather seats and door trims and matching leather-wrapped steering wheel, pearl white meter panel, dark chrome air-conditioner vents and a CD player with mp3 capability.

The good thing about getting a model with a bodykit supplied by the manufacturer is that not only is the fit and finish of the same quality as the rest of the car but there is also a warranty on the bodykit – something which you would not usually get from an accessory shop. Furthermore, the cost of the bodykit and accessories can be included in the total purchase price, meaning that you can pay for the accessories over the many years of the H-P loan.

Also unveiled at the same event was the Exora with a manual transmission. This variant, which also uses a CAMPRO 1.6 CPS engine, has been long-awaited and has an insurance-inclusive price of RM64,998 (metallic finish) and RM64,548 (non-metallic finish).

“Both the new models are officially open for booking at all Proton Edar and EON showrooms; a booking fee of RM500 is required for the Saga SE and RM1,000 for the Exora with manual transmission. However, the new Saga SE will only be available for sale from August 15th onwards and the Exora MT from July 16th onwards,” said Proton Holdings MD, Dato’ Haji Syed Zainal Abidin Syed Mohamed Tahir.

The Muron body kit is built of fiber glass components, in which elements of carbon fiber can be implemented. And because every MAFF concept is meant to flatter each of the human senses, the configuration of the sound system is as elaborate and quality focused as the rest of the Muron project. So, depending on what the clients desire, there can be installed varied sound systems with first class components from brands like Alpine. MAFF tunes them and incorporates them in the cockpit’s design with great attention to detail and in a very elegant manner. For example, the subwoofer placed in the boot of the car is inside a resonance box upholstered like the rest of the cockpit. This box may even include a hidden storage aria.

There is also a multimedia kit, which includes the navigation system and is compatible with any audio or video format. On its main display, which can retract in the dashboard, are also shown the images captured by the video cameras integrated in the front and rear bumpers. Of course, the multimedia unit is correlated with the auxiliary displays, which can be implemented in the head rests, in the ceiling or in any other place, if the client’s fantasies dictate so.

The Muron project means personality, refinement, fantasy but we can not omit the fact that our object of work is a Porsche, a name acknowledged as being synonymous with performance and racing. Thus, MAFF set free even more of the potential this massive sports car has. Regardless of the engine version we work on, we can raise the power with up to 100 HP, without affecting the endurance of the engine. The power bonus is the result of the reconfigured electronic management of the engine, the fitting of bigger turbines and sportier admission systems and all the additional components for these.

Toyota Wish with Valvematic - 2009

Toyota has unveiled a redesigned version of the popular 7-seater Toyota Wish MPV. The Wish goes on sale in Japan first and will probably come to Malaysia soon.

In Japan, the Wish receives Toyota’s new Valvematic engines. Valvematic is a continuously variable valve timing and valve lift mechanism, while VVT-i which affects timing. The engines are the 2ZR-FAE for the 1.8L model and the 3ZR-FAE for the 2.0L.

The 2.0L makes an impressive 158 PS at 6,200rpm and 196Nm of torque at 4,400rpm (of course the king of the hill is still the Optima facelift’s 163 PS), while the 1.8L units either put out 144 PS and 176Nm of torque or 133 PS and 164Nm of torque. The lower figures are for models equipped with the 4WD drivetrain.

All engines are mated to the Super CVT-i transmission, and some have manual paddle shifting for 7 virtual CVT gear ratios.Fuel consumption is said to have improved and exceeds Japanese 2010 standards by 20% for the 1.8L model, and 15% for the 2.0L model. The 2.0L unit gets 15.2km/l based on the Japanese 10-15 cycle, and the 1.8L model gets 16.0km/l.

In terms of practicality, the maximum luggage capacity has had its width increased by 95mm. The slimmer seatbacks for the seats increase legroom for the rows behind it. Front diagonal visibility is better by attaching the side mirrors to the door panels and reducing the width of the A-pillars. Seat covers have been treated with an anti-mite agent, and the climate control system has the Camry’s Plasmacluster air-purifying technology. The steering wheel is both tilt and reach adjustable.

The Wish also adds an improved version of VSC called S-VSC, which also uses the electric power steering system to apply appropriate steering torque to help stabilize it. High spec models get features such as keyless entry and start via a push button starter. The Wish has a parking assist system that tells you when to turn the steering wheel and when to back up during parallel parking, but doesn’t turn the wheel for you itself. There is also a 10-speaker Wish Panoramic Live Sound System for surround sound audio.

In the Exora, which has a brand new platform, the constraint of that driving position is not there and they have had a chance to get it right and this time, they have. It’s a very comfortable position and being a MPV, the seating height is higher which gives a commanding view forward. Women drivers especially will appreciate this as it promotes confidence.

The Campro CPS engine in the Exora has adequate power and torque to meet such a requirement satisfactorily and I believe that 90% of people would have no complaints. The other 10% who may feel it is 'under-powered’ would be those who expect performance levels like a Waja or Persona and they are probably not the target buyers for a MPV anyway.

Honda Malaysia Sdn Bhd has announced that the second generation Honda Jazz will be launched before the end of the year. The new Jazz has continued in the award-winning footsteps of its predecessor and has recently been voted Japan’s Car of the Year 2007/2008. It will probably pick up a few more awards locally once introduced here.

There are a few changes to the Jazz, for those who are used to the first generation Jazz’s dual engine variants. With the new Jazz, i-DSI has dropped out of the picture and there are only 1.3 and 1.5 liter i-VTEC engines.

The CVT gearbox remains but seems to be offered in Japan only at the moment (where it is called the Honda Fit), with our region getting a 5-speed automatic with dual overdrives for lower highway cruising engine RPM.

Since June 1, the new law in Malaysia requiring rear passengers to use their seatbelts has come into force so remind your passengers to buckle up. The Transport Minister has confirmed that no summons will be issued until the end of August 2008 if a rear passenger is not using the seatbelt so do not be fooled by any policeman who attempts to issue one. Vehicles registered after January 1 1995 must have rear seatbelts; if they are not present, they must be installed within 3 years.

Although the redesigned Honda Fit made its international debut last fall at the Tokyo Motor Show, American Honda decided to keep its version of this small city car under wraps until New York.

While the basic car is similar to the Japanese-market model, the U.S. version sports a different front and rear treatment to better fit in with Honda's U.S. lineup. The black mesh grille opening and new headlamps align with the recently introduced Accord. At the rear, a hatch-topping wing that was optional in Japan is standard on U.S. models.

Other new features include a rear seat that allows the seat bottoms to be folded up into the seatbacks, opening up the area behind the front seats. The open area is large enough to accommodate a bike or other tall objects. Also new on the car is an optional onboard navigation system, a first for a car of this class.

Power comes from a transversely mounted 1.5-liter 4-cylinder engine mated to a 5-speed manual or automatic transmission. Base Fit models are equipped with 15-in. wheels, while the sport versions boast 16- inches. The new Honda Fit goes on sale this fall and will be priced at about $15,000.

Volvo Car Malaysia (VCM) will soon be putting its new 2008 models in the showrooms and one of the exciting new models will be the C30, Volvo's challenger in the premium compact car segment. The 2-door hatchback, which scored 5/5 stars in the EuroNCAP test, is aimed at not only buyers who are younger than the typical Volvo customer but also at older ones whose children have gone off on their own. In fact, Volvo is counting on this model to win over many new customers to the brand.

Technical details of the C30 (which rides on the same platform as the S40 and also the Ford Focus) for Malaysia have not been revealed and so far, it has been sold with a 2.5-litre 5-cylinder petrol engine (the T5 unit in the V50) with a 5-speed automatic transmission or 6-speed manual shifter. A source told MTM that it is possible that there will be a smaller engine for the Malaysian market.

The other new addition to the Volvo line-up for 2008 will be a turbodiesel variant of the XC90 SUV. The diesel variant has long been desired by many customers not only because of rising fuel prices but also because the modern turbodiesels offer spirited performance and are as enjoyable to drive as petrol engines. Offering this engine variant in Malaysia would certainly boost sales of the XC90 which has been around some time now.
"Volvo is coming out with more exciting cars that are more beautiful, sporty, sexy, innovative, daring and captivating so this is going to be an exciting year for us," promised Robert Norrman, President of Volvo Car Malaysia.

It's been quite a while since a new Toyota Corolla was launched… longer than usual in fact as the last model change was in 2001. Typically, Corolla model changes in its 42-year history have averaged 4 to 5 years but the 10th generation took some seven years to be developed. The reason for this, according to Yasuo Kamata, the Assistant Chief Engineer for the model, was because it is a global model and the planning had to be synchronized. Presumably, in the interests of reducing costs, Toyota wanted to streamline development of the new generation which has variations for North America, Japan, Europe and Asia.

Anyway, it's finally arrived in Malaysia (the media preview had actually been scheduled for March 6 but had to be postponed when UMW Toyota Motor, along with the rest of Malaysia, learnt that it would be voting day) and already, 800 units have been pre-sold (65% of orders are for the 1.8). That is what UMWT aims to sell each month this year and it once again shows the power of the Toyota brand.

As before, there are two engine choices - 1.8 litres and 1.6 litres - but the variations have been expanded to five from the previous two. Besides the Corolla Altis 1.8G and 1.6E, there is now a 1.8E and two extra versions with sporty bodykits included. Five colour choices (with two shades of silver) are also offered.

The styling for this tenth generation suggests that Toyota designers are striving to have a 'corporate face' for their models as it has the same bold frontal appearance that was first seen in the Camry and then the Vios.

Dimensionally, the overall length is just 10 mm longer than the previous Corolla Altis but the overall width has been increased by 55 mm to 1760 mm. The wheelbase is unchanged at 2600 mm while the overall height is reduced by 15 mm. According to Mr Kamata, the present dimensions are considered to be 'optimum' for this class of cars.

The new Corolla Altis has a wider and lower profile which was achieved by having the bottom of the A-pillar moved forward and the bottom of the C-pillar moved back to increase the angle of the window glass (which also improved aerodynamic performance). Using a modelling technique called "sweep cut," the designers crafted character lines that sweep from the bonnet toward the A-pillars. Other character lines carry rearward at the level of the door handles, emphasizing the low profile, and sweep down from the C-pillar and along the top edges of the rear fenders.

The combination headlamp (with a 3-bulb design that is integrated with the multi-reflector high beam) has an outline that follows the bumper shape, an interesting design touch. The shape of the headlamps is mimicked at the back with the large rear combination LED lamps.

The rear design of a sedan is always important and the new Corolla Altis has a sweeping cut of the rear pillar emphasising the flowing lines to the rear and the cab forward stance. The overall effect is strong and wide with the lower edge of the bumper adopting a sporty, aerodynamic look.

Standard for all versions of the new Corolla Altis are foglamps integrated in recesses at each end of the front bumper and supplementary turn indicators integrated in the door mirror housings. The latter feature, which places the indicators higher, provides better awareness of the driver's intentions to other motorists.

In shaping the new Corolla Altis, a lot of attention was given to aerodynamic efficiency which, at cruising speed, helps improve fuel economy as there is less wind resistance. Less turbulence on the body also lowers noise levels while stability at higher speeds can be enhanced.

Examples of the efforts to improve aerodynamics can be seen in the profile of the A-pillars which decreases wind noise. The upper side of the cowl louvre shape was also raised to regulate the flow of the air hitting the windscreen wipers. The windscreen glass is flush-mounted to smooth the flow of air over the glass and to minimize their exposure to airflow while they are at rest, the windshield washers are partially shielded by the rear edge of the bonnet, instead of on the top surface.

Smooth shapes with minimal differences in surface levels and precise panel gaps further reduce drag with the lower edge of the front and rear bumpers, and the rear body cut-off have been designed to minimise air disturbance. Even under the new Corolla Altis, efforts have been made to smoothen the airflow: underbody covers for engine, fuel tank and rear floor are fitted to create a flat surface.

In accordance with its premium positioning (in its class), the new Corolla Altis 1.8G comes with an extensive list of standard equipment and fittings, including Optitron meters for the instrument panel and a Multi-Info Display (MID). The Optitron meters, with their 3-dimensional appearance for the calibrations, were first used in various models of Lexus, Toyota's luxury brand, and are noted for excellent clarity under all lighting conditions.

The MID is a LCD panel incorporated in the tachometer and gives the driver important information such as mileage travelled, cruising range on the fuel remaining in the 55-litre fuel tank, average fuel consumption, external air temperature and elapsed time since starting a journey.

Other items exclusive to the new Corolla Altis 1.8G include power-operated front seats with 8-way adjustment using knobs at the side of the seats, side protection moulding and chrome door handles, a chromed rear plate garnish over the numberplate, Wood trim is also standard for the top version of the new Corolla Altis range.

Both 1.8-litre versions have additional switches on the steering wheel to operate the audio system, 60:40 folding rear backrest to extend boot capacity (which can take four golfbags) and a centre armrest for rear passengers.

For convenience, the air-conditioning system in both 1.8-litre versions are automatic and when the driver sets a specific temperature desired, the system will automatically cool down the cabin and maintain the temperature in the most efficient way possible using a combination of blower speeds and vents.

For the comfort of the front occupants, the centre armrest (which serves as a cover for the storage box) between the seats is not only set high but can also extend forward to a comfortable position. The driver will also appreciate the two-way adjustment for the steering wheel - for height as well as for reach. Rear occupants also enjoy more comfort with the flatter floor as the centre hump which runs along the middle of the cabin is lowered, increasing legroom.

Storage space is plentiful with as many as 21 different compartments for small items and drink containers (we counted!). Even the glovebox has extra capacity with its dual compartment design - and no, the extra compartment is not an empty airbag slot for the passenger since all versions have airbags for both front occupants. Besides having a dampened drop-down feature, the glovebox handle is also offset closer to the centre console to make it easier for the driver to open it.

Given that many people often spend long periods of time in a car, the audio system chosen is said to offer high quality sound reproduction and radio reception. The head unit, which can play CDs with mp3 or WMA formats as well as conventional audio formats, is neatly integrated in the dashboard. Six speakers are provided as standard for the Corolla Altis 1.8G (which also has an in-dash 6-CD changer) while the Corolla Altis 1.8E and 1.6E have four speakers.

Sound-absorbing coating and material is carefully positioned through the dash and floor to maximum effect while further sound insulation is placed throughout the interior with roof silencers between the roof reinforcements, sound insulating carpets and felt in each trim panel. Finally, road noise is further suppressed by installing sound-absorbing material under the wheel arches and door seals are double insulating.

Tests by Toyota engineers confirm the effectiveness of the noise-reducing measures taken for the new Corolla Altis. At speeds up to 100 km/h, the new model is quieter and even with the door closed and engine switched off, the transmission of noise from outside is claimed to be less than before.

The two all-aluminium engines available are actually the same as before and while they have undergone improvements and internal friction has been lowered, their output is also slightly less:

The reason for the reduction in output has been due to raising the emission control standard compliance to the more stringent Euro-3 level, which has required (among other things), the installation of two catalytic converters. The Malaysian government has yet to upgrade its emission control standards to Euro-3 but since there was an indication that it would do so in due course, Toyota decided to offer the engine which met the higher standard, according to Akio Takeyama, Executive Director of UMWT.

Though the output is slightly lower than before, Mr Kamata said that the engineers have actually managed to improve the new car's performance by adding an Electronic Throttle with intelligence (ETCS-i) as well as enhancing the design of the intake/exhaust manifold areas. Gear ratios have also been revised to improve responsiveness. Toyota's own tests conducted at its R&D track in Thailand with the new 1.8-litre Corolla Altis sold in Malaysia show that the acceleration time from 0 to 100 km/h is 11.37 seconds, quicker than the 12.45 seconds of the previous model. For the 0 to 400-metre sprint, it takes 17.99 seconds now whereas the previous model took 18.63 seconds. Intermediate acceleration is also better as the torque curve has been made flatter and acceleration from 80 to 100 km/h takes less than 2 seconds.

The standard transmission for all versions of the new Corolla Altis is a 4-speed electronically-managed automatic transmission which has the Toyota Super ECT (intelligent programming which optimises gear selection, especially on hilly terrain). For the 1.8-litre versions, transmission operation is sequential and the shifter has a gated slot which gives an experience like that of a manual transmission.

Why not a 5-speed automatic transmission, which Honda offers in the Civic 2.0? To this question, Mr Kamata would only say that 'the 4-speed transmission is considered as best suited for the model'.

The chassis of the new Corolla Altis has high tensile-strength steel, gussets and cross-members for its strength, rigidity and lightweight construction. To this is mounted a MacPherson strut front suspension with a stabilizer bar. The newly-developed, compact and highly rigid front suspension the MacPherson strut in-board of the wheel hub to reduce noise and vibration.

The rear suspension employs a coil-over-shock absorber arrangement with a torsion beam, the same layout that was also used previously. A torsion beam design is less complex and cheaper than an independent set-up and typically, Toyota uses a platform for two generations so it's not surprising that there is no major change to the suspension.

The suspension layout separates the coil spring and damper while allowing a wider track for the cargo area to have a larger volume. Newly-designed slanted trailing bushes allow precise control of camber and toe changes in response to lateral forces and the geometry has also been set to enhance stability is achieved in straightline driving.

Disc brakes are fitted front and rear with 15-inch ventilated discs for the front brakes for fade-free performance during hard braking and in conditions where there is frequent use of the brakes. The brake components have been redesigned to reduce weight and increased effectiveness is provided with high-friction pads.

In a significant departure from the past, power assistance to the steering rack is now supplied by a compact electric motor, speed reducer and torque sensor built into the steering column. The amount of assistance the system delivers varies according to engine rpm and road speed (and it can be programmed by the engineers too). EPS, as this system is referred to, also contributes to negating the engine output reduction as it doesn't 'rob' engine power.

Use of EPS should also enhance fuel economy because it uses electrical power only when assistance is necessary. It does not require oil (which is also good for the environment), unlike conventional hydraulic power steering systems with energizers. In the unlikely event that an abnormality should occur within the EPS, a fail-safe function will shut down the output current. The system then becomes fully manual (and will feel heavier) but remains fully operable. A warning lamp in the dash will illuminate to warn the driver of the abnormality which should be checked as soon as possible.

As with all Toyota models today, the new Corolla Altis has passed the Global Outstanding Assessment (GOA) which is Toyota's tough in-house set of crash safety standards relating to Passive Safety. GOA standards, established on the mid-1990s and periodically updated, are said to be comparable to the standards set by many countries and in some cases, even exceed them.

Structural reinforcements and crossmembers are placed through the body to disperse impact energy around the passenger compartment and minimise the risk of injury to the occupants. Specific items include high-tensile sheet steel in reinforcements, crossmembers and tunnel-bracing, and roof reinforcement. Door impact beams help reduce intrusion in side impacts and disperse energy around the bodyshell. In addition, impact-absorbing materials in the door panels and trim help to suppress impact forces.

Both front occupants have airbags as supplementary restraint to the seatbelts which have force-limiters and pre-tensioners to enhance their effectiveness. The front seats are also constructed to reduce whiplash injury (which can occur during a severe rear-end collision) while energy-absorbing materials in the upper areas of the cabin reduce injuries to the head. For the driver, there is the added protection from being injured by the steering column as it will collapse during a severe frontal impact, preventing it from being forced further inwards.

Considerable work also went into designing the bonnet and frontal areas of the new Corolla Altis to reduce the effect of impacts on pedestrians. The rear edge of the bonnet (where an adult head might land) has a crushable structure and the windscreen wiper pivot can drop away beneath the cowl in the event of an impact. On the front edge of the bonnet, the dent reinforcement has been moved away from the main surface and the bonnet catch moved down and away from the design surface. Impact absorbers are mounted ahead of the bumper and radiator fixings.

All versions of the new Corolla Altis come with 4-wheel ABS and Brake Assist (which boosts braking pressure during emergency braking) . Electronic Brake Force Distribution (EBD), also available, enhances ABS by optimizing the brake force on each wheel. This is important because loads in the car may vary and dynamic forces will also differ during cornering. EBD distributes the force applied to the front and rear brakes according to the conditions so there is more stable braking. It can also control the braking of the right and left wheels separately to ensure that braking during cornering is stable.

As with the previous generation, Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) with Traction Control System (TRC) is available only in the Corolla Altis 1.8G. This provides higher levels of driving stability, especially on wet and slippery surfaces. Using data from various sensors, VSC detects wheelspin during high-speed cornering or cornering on slippery surfaces, a condition which can cause the car to skid out of control and possibly crash. Should such a condition is detected, the system applies the appropriate amount of braking force on the wheels and also cuts back on engine power to allow stability and grip to be regained.

VSC has the ability to detect whether the condition is oversteer or understeer and takes the necessary action to neutralize the dangerous condition immediately. If it is oversteer, power is cut and the brake on the front outside wheel is applied; an understeer condition is neutralized by also cutting the power but applying the brake on the rear inside wheel.

TRC is an integral part of VSC but its function differs slightly. TRC prevents wheelspin when accelerating hard on slippery roads so that it is possible to move forward positively. It does this by lowering engine torque as needed and also applying braking force on any wheel that is spinning.

For the first time since the Corolla was introduced here in the 1960s, the model is not being assembled in Malaysia. Like the latest Camry, it will be imported from the huge Toyota factory in Thailand as a Completely Built-Up (CBU) model. Explaining this change, UMWT MD Kuah Kock Heng said the reason is not due to the assembly plant in Malaysia lacking capacity but is due to Toyota's regional strategy which aims to achieve better economies of scale for each model.

Toyota showed off its super compact, C-segment iQ to the world in Geneva today. The car was first shown in concept form at Frankfurt last year, and will be produced in late 2008.

Toyota is touting the iQ as the ultimate refined mode of transportation and at less than 118 inches in length, it’s certainly small enough to be a devoted city runabout.

The iQ is called a 3+1, meaning it is capable of carrying up to three adults along with a child or luggage in comfort.

Toyota is especially proud of the six engineering innovations it utilized to maximized interior space in the iQ in addition to the long wheelbase of nearly 79 inches, which minimizes overhangs but maximizes the space between the wheels. The first includes a newly developed compact differential, alone said to be responsible for over 100mm of added length in the cabin in comparison to the B-segment Toyota Yaris. The rest includes rear-angled shocks and a flat fuel tank under the seats, a smaller heater / air conditioner unit that’s just as efficient, a center take-off steering column, an asymmetrical dashboard as well as slimmer seats claimed to contribute about 1.5 inches in length to the interior. Despite its small size, the iQ received a 5-star safety rating in Euro NCAP testing.

“We came to the conclusion that, in order to ensure a sustainable future, there was a need for a radical change in vehicle packaging. We needed to create a break-through, away

from the traditional belief that small is basic,” said Kazuo Okamoto, Executive Vice President in charge of Research and Development at Toyota.

The pushed-forward dashboard features temperature controls with an LCD display, as well as a 5.8-inch screen for satellite navigation system.

The iQ showed at Geneva sat on 16-inch wheels and powerplant choices will include two gasoline and one diesel engine. Toyota expects to sell 100,000 units of the iQ in its first year of production globally.

2008 Mugen Type RR Experimental Spec

One of the other concepts that graced Mugen’s stand in Japan at the recent Tokyo Auto Salon was the Civic Type-RR, which in addition to the obvious replacement of the entire front clip with carbon fiber pieces, also includes a K20A engine that’s been bored out to 2157 cc to create a more tractable powerband and an even higher redline.

260 horsepower and 173 lb.-ft. of torque is sent to the six-speed gearbox and down to the front wheels through a LSD. Naturally, the brakes and suspension have been upgraded to handle the extra grunt, while carbon fiber was used inside to beef up the structure.

Mugen also added a system dubbed I-TCMS, or Intelligent Tire Condition Monitoring, which keeps tabs on the tire’s air pressure and temperature. The dash mounted instrument cluster might be a big impediment to forward visibility, but we’re sure it’s nothing compared to the price.

Even before the first month of 2008 has finished, UMW Toyota Motor has broadened its line-up further with the addition of the all-new Toyota Rush. If you haven’t heard about this model coming, that’s because it’s been a well-kept secret by the company although being a CBU import (from Indonesia), its impending launch was less obvious than if it were to be assembled locally.

The Rush is a variant in the ‘Under-IMV’ family of products, the other being the Avanza. The IMV (it stands for ‘Innovative International Multi-purpose Vehicles’) project was conceived as an industrial project which would span the globe and includes the Hilux, Fortuner and Innova; ‘Under-IMV’ models are smaller but use the same approach which has been able to lower production costs so as to be able to offer customers more affordable vehicles. Sharing the same platform as the Avanza helps to enhance economies of scale but the bodystyle is that of a compact SUV rather than a MPV. This means it is aimed at a different target group, mainly the young and active types.

This new model is available in three variants: Rush 1.5S and Rush 1.5G with automatic transmission and Rush 1.5G with manual transmission, and four body colour choices - Blue Metallic, Black Mica, Silver Mica metallic and Champagne Mica Metallic.

The styling of the Rush seems to take cues from the first generation RAV4 as well as the Fortuner, a blend which presents a modern and distinct form with a tough image. Large 16-inch rims are positioned at each corner, giving a bold stance. Of note are the headlamps which have a sharp, 3-dimensional design. The Rush 1.5S has projector headlamps as standard as well as circular foglamps integrated with the bumper.

The door mirrors have turn indicators in their housings, making the driver’s intentions more visible and the chrome door handles are the grip-type which are easier to use. All grades come with a custom-designed spare wheel cover that has a lock to secure the full-sized spare wheel. A rear roof spoiler is fitted for the Rush 1.5S to add a sporty touch and all grades also come with an integrated low-profile roof rail.

The dashboard has some elements of the Avanza in its clean appearance. Metallic trim conveys a sporty image and a light ivory colour for the whole cabin makes it feel more spacious. Sturdy door grips with a metallic finish also give a modern ambience to the interior. The instrument panel is set within a shroud to minimise reflections and enhance legibility. The 3-meter layout has clear calibrations with white illumination for ease of viewing.

The cabin has a usable length of 2440 mm with generous spacing between each row of seats. The interior width of 1385 mm also allows for a comfortable couple distance between the front occupants and good elbow room for the other occupants. Though the exterior dimensions seem compact, the Rush offers a third row of seating for those occasions when additional passengers need to be carried on board. The second row has a 60-mm fore-aft slide adjustment and the backrest can also be reclined for a more relaxing position. This provides more legroom for the passengers in the second row or third row, as required. Access to the third row is also easy with the double-fold operation of the second row of seats. In the event that the third row of seating is not needed, it can be folded forward against the back of the second row to provide more cargo space. Access to the cargo space is through a large and wide opening with a side-hinged door (rare these days as many SUVs have top-hinged doors). The sill is also set low, makng it easy to load cargo straight onto the flat floor.

The automatics have a gate-type shift lever (with leather wrapping for the Rush 1.5S), a leather-wrapped 4-spoke steering wheel (1.5S), power retractable door mirrors (1.5S), audio system with MP3 capability and an additional ceiling mounted blower which delivers cool air all the way to the back. Being a SUV, storage spaces are plentiful around the cabin. Other standard items include a sunglass holder and personal lamp at the front. While the cheapest Rush has a basic package, the 1.5S version is comprehensively equipped and will probably attract more buyers.

Under the bonnet is the same powerplant as that used for the Avanza 1.5 - a 1.5-litre 4-cylinder 16-valve DOHC petrol engine (3SZ-VE) with Toyota’s Variable Valve Timing with Intelligence (VVT-i). The engine delivers up to 109 ps of power at 6000 rpm and peak torque of 141 Nm is available at 4400 rpm.

Power delivery is through either a 5-speed manual transmission or 4-speed automatic transmission. Like the Avanza, the driving wheels are at the rear… yes, it’s a 2WD and not a 4WD. In some markets, 4WD variants are also available but UMW Toyota Motor has decided to import the 2WD variant for now (most likely to keep the price under RM100,000). Though some will feel that a SUV should have 4WD, it is not really necessary for a model like the Rush which is expected to be used mostly in urban areas and even if venturing off the highway, conditions encountered would not be so severe that 4WD is needed. In fact, what matters more is ground clearance which is generous under the Rush. 2WD offers benefits such as lower drivetrain weight, less wear and tear on related components and generally better fuel economy than an equivalent 4WD variant.

The Rush has a sturdy suspension comprising independent MacPherson struts in front (with a stabilizer bar fitted) and a live axle located by 4 links at the rear with coil springs. A lateral rod is also fitted to maintain axle stability during fast cornering. The standard tyres are a wide 215/65 size.

Though a low-cost product, the Rush still meets high safety standards, having passed GOA – the Global Outstanding Assessment which is Toyota’s tough in-house set of safety standards. GOA primarily relates to the body structure which must be able to prevent the impact forces of an accident from harming the occupants. It achieves this by dissipating the forces into the entire body. Pedestrian safety is also considered and the exterior of the front end is shaped to minimise the impact to a pedestrian’s head and legs, reducing serious injuries in many cases.

All three variants have an airbag for the driver with the Rush 1.5S having an additional one for the front passenger as well. The steering column is collapsible so that it will not be pushed against the driver during severe frontal collision. A reverse sensor is standard.

Of course, avoiding an accident in the first place is much better and the Rush has Active Safety Systems to help the driver. The brake system has ABS with Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD), the latter being very useful as it adjusts the braking force to each brake depending on load conditions and load distribution. Therefore whether there is a light load or heavy load, stopping power will always be optimum. ABS, of course, manages the brakes so that they do not lock-up in slippery conditions to cause skidding and loss of steering control.

It is surprising, though, to see that the front discs of the Rush are solid rather than ventilated, which is the norm these days. Clearly, Toyota is more focussed on engineering their models down to a cost rather than up to a higher standard.

UMW Toyota Motor expects to sell 600 units of the Rush every month, a figure which seems quite possible to achieve consistently given the price range between RM85,000 and RM95,000. With the addition of this model, the Toyota line-up is at its largest ever with 14 models offered. The variety of offerings should ensure that Toyota stays in its No. 1 position in the non-national brand segment again this year.

DaimlerChrysler Malaysia Sdn. Bhd, a subsidiary of Daimler AG, has changed its name to Mercedes-Benz Malaysia Sdn. Bhd. The change of name, which takes effect from today, is in line with a global name change from DaimlerChrysler to Daimler AG which followed the departure of Chrysler from the group last year.

Depending on the market, some subsidiaries like the one in Malaysia will use the Mercedes-Benz name as the prestige brand is the key area of business activity. In other markets and in Germany, Daimler AG is used to better reflect the broad nature of the group’s business.
“The new name reflects our company’s key business activity, which comes from the main contributor, Mercedes-Benz. With the name change, our operation and business model will remain status quo. In addition, we believe that our new name will further enhance all our future marketing and communication efforts,” said Peter Honegg, President & CEO of Mercedes-Benz Malaysia.

“On another note, our focus on Mitsubishi Fuso will continue to be strong and we look forward to its future expansion. Meanwhile, under the new name as well as the new Mercedes-Benz logo, we will continue to honour our brand’s long and prestigious tradition,” added Mr. Honegg.

The cross-over concept is a fairly recent one, having appeared during this decade. It’s essentially an ‘evolution’ of the SUV bodystyle, merging the best features of the SUV with the MPV and stationwagon – while offering a comfortable ride and sedan-like handling. The emergence of this new genre of bodystyles was probably in response to changing lifestyles where outdoor activities are more common and therefore there has been a need for a versatile vehicle. The traditional bodystyles like the stationwagon and MPV are, well, traditional and to appeal to the new generation of consumers, a ‘cross-over’ has been created.

The Suzuki SX4 is such a vehicle and takes the best of Suzuki’s DNA from its compact cars like the Swift and mixes it with the small SUV heritage that the company is also known for. An Italian studio was brought in to collaborate on the styling which was important since the SX4 is a major model for Suzuki in Europe to the extent that they are even building it there (in Hungary).

For the SX4, a new platform was developed and this is an evolution of the one used for the Swift. The suspension – comprising MacPherson struts in front and a rear torsion beam – was thoroughly tested in Europe to give the SX4 handling dynamics that European drivers would like. Thus it is said to offer crisp and responsive handling without compromising comfort. Incidentally, the SX4 is the model which Suzuki will use to compete in the World Rally Championship starting with the 2008 season.

As can be seen, the SX4 sits up high 175 mm off the ground, allowing it to travel over rough terrain without scraping its underside. Large 16-inch wheels contribute to the generous ground clearance and the tracks are also wide for stability, important as the vehicle is on the tall side.

The SX4 is available with 2WD and 4WD drivetrains but for now, Suzuki Malaysia Automobile (SMA) is importing only the 2WD variant from Japan in CBU form. According to SMA CEO Bastamam Hamzah, demand for the SX4 is great and Suzuki Japan is not ready to offer the 4WD variant in Malaysia. “It is being looked at and when the time is right and more importantly, production can be allocated for Malaysia, then we will of course add it to the line-up,” he said.

The front wheels get 102 bhp/140 Nm from the 1.6-litre 16-valve petrol engine via a 4-speed automatic transmission. The engine, which is a milder version of that used in the Swift Sport, is a long-stroker so torque should be stronger and with variable valve timing on the intake side, there is no compromise on either end of the rev range.

The cabin of the SX4 bears the hallmarks of Suzuki cars and there is a certain familiarity in the layout and touchpoints of the dashboard. Clean and functional would best describe the dashboard which includes a tripcomputer (to tell the fuel consumption) tucked into a recess in the centre section. The leather-wrapped steering wheel has control switches to operate the audio system which is MP3/WMA compatible.

The 2500 mm wheelbase and 1755 mm wide body promises spacious and comfortable accommodation for five. Depending on what has to be carried, the rear backrests which are divided in a 60:40 ratio can be folded down, extending the cargo floor area and increase cargo volume. According to the German VDA method of measurement, the cargo volume can go up to 1045 litres, 3.8 times the volume available when both backrests are up.

As for safety, Suzuki has made sure it’s as safe as possible and apart from the strong, rigid body, there is also ABS + EBD and Brake Assist. Two airbags are standard for the front and needless to say, all five occupants have seatbelts.

For a CBU import from Japan, the asking price of RM89,973 (RM94,377 with glass tinting and leather upholstery) is attractive and should draw some people away from recent new models in the same price range. However, SMA is not aiming for big numbers yet and expects to sell 50 units a month.

Encik Bastamam said that local assembly is also being studied and SMA’s parent company, DRB-HICOM is certainly keen to see more models assembled at its Pekan, Pahang, plant which has advanced manufacturing equipment and is so far only doing the Swift. However, it is possible that the 5-door SX4 might not be the one assembled as there is also a 4-door sedan variant and Malaysia being a sedan market, it would make more sense to assemble that variant.

Volkswagen Golf R32

Volkswagen Malaysia has started selling the top of the range Volkswagen Golf R32 in Malaysia, featuring a 3.2 liter V6 engine and 4MOTION all-wheel drive, with a price tag of RM302,618.50 on the road without insurance.

It does the 0-100km/h sprint in 6.2 seconds - 0.7 seconds faster than the Golf GTI , thanks to it’s 250 PS at 6,300rpm and 320Nm of torque that kicks in from 2,800rpm, a relatively low engine speed for a normally aspirated engine. Power is sent to all four wheels via 4MOTION all-wheel drive and a 6-speed DSG gearbox.

Other than the 4MOTION system, the car also has ESP stability control, Traction Control, ABS, and an Electronic Differential Lock to keep things into check. Passive safety is provided by 6 SRS airbags. The car rides on 18 inch wheels of the Omanyt design.

On the interior you have nice sports bucket seats, rain sensor wiper control, dual-zone climate control, and a 10-speaker Volkswagen Sound RCD 500 system with an 8-channel 250W analog amplifier.

Toyota is a favourite among Malaysians

While national brands take the largest share of the Malaysian new vehicle market, among the non-national brands, Toyota is at the top of the list of Malaysian buyers, suggests a survey conducted by Ratera & van Galen Sdn. Bhd, an independent market research firm based in Kuala Lumpur. 1,233 Malaysian buyers were interviewed on their preferred choice if they were to buy a new vehicle within the next 12 months.

One aspect of the survey, which looked at buyer preferences in the RM60,000 – RM99,000 range, showed that the Toyota Vios was the first choice, followed by the Honda City and Toyota Avanza. It should, however, be noted that the Vios which was referred to was the previous generation and not the latest one as the survey was conducted in the months of July and August 2007; the new 3rd generation Vios only appeared in showrooms during October.

“This finding may reflect the importance of design, an area in which the Vios scored slightly better than the City whilst scoring lower or equal on other factors,” said Toon van Galen, director of Ratera & van Galen.

Interestingly, women made up 39% of the potential car buyers and had a higher preference for the Toyota Innova, Toyota Avanza, Naza Citra or Honda City as their top choices. Men, on the other hand, would go more for Toyota Hilux, Nissan Frontier or the Honda Civic.

The research also revealed that the most important information sources when buying a new car are: word of mouth (58%) followed by car showrooms or dealerships (50 %).

Peugeot 908 RC

The other car that was creating a stir in Hall 1 on Friday was the Peugeot 908 RC. On the outside, it's a really sinister yet somehow really beautiful ultra luxury sedan concept; it was evidently styled to resemble a big cat. Peugeot refers to it as a limousine and indeed it's over 16 feet long. On the inside, it's a rear-drive, rear-engine performance car.

That engine is a 5.5-liter turbodiesel V12 capable of 700 hp and 885 lb-ft of torque -- the company developed it to use in the Le Mans series and, as on a racecar, the V12 is supported by a tubular subframe. The six-speed sequential manual transmission that delivers all this torque the rear wheels resides underneath the engine, leaving room for a proper trunk behind the rear axle.

s massive as it appears, the 908 RC probably isn't too heavy for its size, as Peugeot built it using a combination of carbon composite and aluminum honeycomb. However, the wheels, which you can't help but stare at, certainly don't save any weight -- 20s in front, 21s in back. In the cabin, there's seating for only four, but Peugeot insists there's ample room and visibility to go around, as the rear-mounted engine allowed designers to move the seating position farther forward.

TOKYO (Oct. 24, 2007) - Nissan Motor Co., Ltd., today announced the launch of the Nissan GT-R, a new multi-dimensional performance machine that lives up to the concept of “an ultimate supercar for anyone, anywhere, at anytime”. The Nissan GT-R features a newly developed Premium Midship package, including the world’s first independent transaxle 4WD developed independently by Nissan. Packaging and Driveline Suited for a Supercar

The all-new Nissan GT-R uses a Premium Midship package, an all-new, more advanced version Front Midship (FM) package utilized on other Nissan vehicles. This new package enables the use of the world’s first application of an independent transaxle 4WD system. The transaxle’s layout places the dual-clutch transmission, transfer case and final drive at the rear of the vehicle (instead of the usual front location), which enables vehicle weight to be evenly distributed throughout the car. This gives the Nissan GT-R a superb front-to-rear weight balance, while enhancing leg and foot space and allowing for an optimal pedal layout.

Under the hood, the Nissan GT-R features an all-new 3.8-litre twin turbo V6 “VR38″ engine, featuring plasma-sprayed bores and a special twin-turbo exhaust manifold system. A secondary air management system enables the newly designed powerplant to provide approximately 40kg/m of torque during ordinary low-rev driving, which gives an optimum air-fuel ratio for around-town efficiency and helps the Nissan GT-R meet ultra-low emission vehicle (U-LEV) standards in Japan.

The Nissan GT-R’s new engine produces 480PS (353kW) at 6400rpm and maximum torque of 60kgm (588Nm) from 3200 to 5200rpm. Putting the power to the ground is an all-new GR6-type dual clutch transmission, with paddle shifting and a Borg Warner six-plate dual clutch for direct control.

Suspension duties are handled through a special Bilstein DampTronic*1 system, which utilizes all pertinent vehicle information to provide appropriate damping forces for all situations and helps maintain a high level of control for straight-line driving, cornering, and braking.

Braking is essential for a daily-driven supercar and the GT-R features large Brembo full-floating drilled rotors, low steel high stiffness brake pads and Brembo mono block six-piston front and four-piston rear calipers, which in combination minimize fade and provide stable braking. Run-flat tires, exclusively designed for use on the Nissan GT-R, balance high grip and all-weather capabilities and a comfortable ride in all driving situations. The tires are designed to maintain structure for 80km of travel at 80 km/h, while still providing an acceptable level of performance.

High-Performance Safety and Environmental Technologies
The Nissan GT-R offers a long list of safety and environmental features, including, for enhanced visibility inside and out of the vehicle, high-mounted LED stoplamps, bright LED rear combination taillights, “super wide beam” headlights, heated door mirrors and flat-blade wipers.

Standard safety equipment includes a pop-up engine hood system for enhanced pedestrian safety, driver and front passenger SRS Air Bag System, ELR front seat belts with tension reducer, front seat belts with load limiter, and three-point ELR rear seat belts. Driver and front passenger SRS Side Air Bag System and SRS Curtain Air Bag System are offered as options.

Environmental technologies include extensive work to create an U-LEV certification in Japan for the 3.8-liter twin turbo engine and reduced levels of volatile organic compound for materials used in the car.

Functional Design - High Performance Aerodynamics and Style
The Nissan GT-R’s styling follows the function over form theory. Every styling aspect, from the overall design to the smallest details, is created to maximize the vehicle’s driving experience - as well as suggesting GT-R’s “supercar” level of performance. Utilizing advanced aerodynamics, the Nissan GT-R’s aggressive styling evokes the lines of a well-trained athlete, combining strong character lines with smooth and solid areas.

The all-new GT-R’s body is created with a combination of steel, carbon fiber and aluminum, providing a unique combination of stiffness and lightness. The Nissan GT-R features a low coefficient of drag of 0.27, with high front and rear downforce, which provides the GT-R with enhanced grip in all weather situations, while also enhancing fuel efficiency.

The front fenders express power and stability, while the “aero-blades” on the fenders’ leading edges provide optimum airflow around the tires and along the body. The Nissan GT-R’s large, four-passenger cabin features a sloping “aero blade canopy” roofline and curved C-pillar “sword edge,” which expresses the distinctive GT-R identity, as well as facilitating air flow around the rear of the vehicle. The GT-R’s hallmark four-ring taillights, efficient rear spoiler and large, integrated φ120 exhaust tips, provides the signature rear view of the GT-R, as well as optimizing airflow along the top and under the vehicle.

The high level of advanced technology is evident even in the Nissan GT-R’s paint - which utilizes a “double clear coat” and “anti-chipping” process. The Nissan GT-R features Ultimate Silver as a special new color, which is painstakingly hand-polished by craftsman.

An Interior Suitable for Daily Driving or Supercar Duties
Key to the Nissan GT-R’s usability as a both daily driver and a high-performance supercar is its interior, which is designed to balance functionality, a sense of ease, and comfort.

A specially designed BOSE sound system includes two forward-facing woofers in the rear center armrest area combined with traditional door speakers. Honda Malaysia will begin selling the second generation of the Honda Stream MPV next month. The price has not been announced yet but it is known that it will come with a 1.8-litre engine therefore it should be cheaper than the present one which has a 2.0-litre engine The units which are sold through its authorized dealers nationwide will have a 3-year factory warranty and free maintenance for the first six months. There will also be promotional offers for Stream parts and services at all authorized Honda dealers.

BMW M3 Saloon

BMW has unveiled details of the hotly anticipated four-door M3 – the most potent M3 saloon ever produced.

Power is supplied by BMW’s new 400bhp 4-litre V8 engine, propelling the compact saloon from 0-62mph (100kph) in just 4.9 seconds – only 0.1 seconds behind the coupe.

BMW’s M division has shunned the seven-speed automatic currently used in the mind-blowing M5 and M6, fitting the new M3 saloon with a six-speed manual gearbox driving the rear wheels.

And the motorsport engineers have installed a complicated differential which can transfer all 400bhp to the wheel with the most grip.

This is only the second M3 saloon to be offered in the car’s four generations, with the last one being introduced in the mid 90’s.

And according to BMW’s EfficientDynamics programme, the new four-door M3 can return 22.8mpg on the combined cycle.

The Munich-based manufacturer has harnessed its engineering expertise and made the new V8 powerplant a full 15kgs lighter than before – despite having increased the capacity – weighing in at just 202kgs.

Inside, the M3 saloon features an M Drive Manager which allows the driver to personalise suspension, traction control and power settings.

And once these have been set, the driver simply has to push the MDrive button which, BMW claim, will ‘transform the M3 from a car suitable to collect the kids from school into a supercar-beater’.

The new M3 saloon will share the coupe’s standard detailing, including 18-inch Dark Graphite double-spoke alloy wheels and the M Division’s trademark twin double exhaust pipes from the rear.

Prices have not yet been announced but expect to pay in the region of £50,000.

2009 Nissan 350Z?

A Japanese magazine presented a few renderings of what is thought to be the highly anticipated 2009 Nissan 350Z. The current 350Z is powered by a 3.5 liter V6 engine, but is believed to get a 3.7 liter engine in 2009 (this mean that the new sportscar Nissan will get the 370Z name).

2008 Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution X

Mitsubishi Motors Corporation announces today that it will launch the Lancer Evolution X high-performance 4WD sedan, newest of the company’s legendary vehicles, on October 1 at dealerships throughout Japan. Featuring a new platform, engine, and exterior and interior designs, the totally redesigned 2.0-liter model will carry a tax-inclusive price tag ranging from 2,997,750 to 3,750,600. Models fitted with the Twin Clutch SST transmission are due to be launched towards the end of November.

The development goal for the new Lancer Evolution X was to make the car as fast as possible, while also making it as safe to drive as possible. To that end Lancer Evolution X is loaded with the very latest in automotive engineering technology, including the S-AWC (Super All Wheel Control) vehicle dynamics control system and the newly developed, power-efficient Twin Clutch SST (Sport Shift Transmission). Lancer Evolution X is a new-generation high-performance 4WD sedan that allows a new category of driver access to Mitsubishi’s dynamic driving experience by underpinning speed with control, security and safety.

Lancer Evolution X’s handsome and aggressive functional design presents an intimidating and exciting aerodynamic exterior suggestive of its superior road performance. This is complemented by a functional interior that encourages the driver to concentrate fully on piloting his machine. Lancer Evolution X uses the front end design identity common to all new Mitsubishi Motors sedans (inverted-slant nose with a trapezoidal grille design) first seen on the new Galant Fortis*. As well as shouting loud the aggressive qualities that mark a high performance sports sedan, the front fascia is crafted for optimum aerodynamic performance.

Lancer Evolution X realizes very high levels of motive and driving performance thanks to its new high-output and lightweight 2.0-liter DOHC MIVEC turbocharged engine with aluminum block, an all-new body and stiffer suspension. Despite its turbocharged pedigree the new model earns a 3-star rating for emissions that are 50% lower than the requirements of the Japanese 2005 standards. And complementing its powerful and clean road performance is the kind of a safety specification one would expect of a new-generation high-performance model: SRS dual-stage airbags for driver and front passenger, SRS knee airbag for driver and adaptive front lighting system (AFS) are all standard equipment on the GSR trim level.

The Twin Clutch SST is a 6-speed automated manual transmission incorporating a dual automated clutch system to deliver lightning-fast, slick shifting for feel-good acceleration; while it also provides high-efficiency power transmission for outstanding fuel economy. In keeping with the higher output and torque developed by the new engine, Lancer Evolution X is offered with a new 5-speed manual transmission that delivers smoother shifting and improved shift feel for those who prefer the joys and more direct control of manual shifting.

All Lancer Evolution X GSR models are fitted with the S-AWC vehicle dynamics control system. The system intelligently manages several component systems to regulate drive torque and braking force at each wheel, reading and reflecting driver intent in real time over a wide range of situations. This allows drivers of all abilities to enjoy sporty driving with peace of mind.

Model lineup

Sporting the S-AWC and Twin Clutch SST and other cutting-edge automotive technology as well as a more comprehensive functional and convenience equipment specification, the GSR trim level (also available with a 5-speed manual transmission) leads the new Lancer Evolution X lineup. The lineup also continues to offer the RS competition base model, with a less comprehensive and simplified equipment specification to reduce weight to a minimum.

To meet customers’ wide-ranging expectations in a high-performance sports sedan, the GSR trim level is available with the following option packages:

High Performance Package : Raises the bar a notch further in terms of driving performance.
Stylish Exterior Package: Adds classy dressup elements to the exterior.
Leather Combination Interior: For a more uptown and comfortable interior.

Also available is the Premium Package that combines all these packages and adds 18-inch BBS lightweight alloy wheels to meld the ultimate in performance with a classy and quality appearance.

Engine

Lancer Evolution X is powered by a new turbocharged engine that adds a high-performance turbocharger to the 4B11-type 2.0-liter 4-cylinder 16-valve DOHC MIVEC unit used in the Galant Fortis. Developing more power over the full rev range, this engine generates more torque at 422 Nm (43.0 kg-m)/3500 rpm and has better response than its 4G63 predecessor. The new engine is also lighter and returns better environmental performance.

The application of continuously variable valve timing technology (MIVEC) to both intake and exhaust camshafts realizes valve timing optimally matched to engine speed and load to stabilize combustion characteristics and allow the engine to develop more power over the full rev range. It also improves emissions performance. Lancer Evolution X earns a 3-star rating for emissions that are 50% under the Japanese 2005 Emissions Standards levels.

The new engine, excluding auxiliary equipment, is 12 kg lighter than the 4G63 thanks to the use of a die-cast aluminum cylinder block, head cover and chain case.

Using a titanium-aluminum alloy turbine wheel and aluminum alloy compressor wheel, the turbocharger features a shape-optimized compressor wheel that improves boost response and increases low-end and mid-range torque.

The adoption of a rearward facing exhaust manifold layout has, as well as improving exhaust efficiency, allowed the engine to be mounted lower, lowering the center of gravity. Other innovations have reduced intake/exhaust system losses and valvetrain friction, contributing to improved engine performance.

Spycam: 2009 Subaru WRX STI

Subaru's all-new WRX STi has been caught testing on the Nurburging again, this time with almost no camouflage.

The regular WRX's much maligned egg crate grille - reportedly the subject of a hurried redesign already - makes way for a simpler mesh-style design. New front fenders are heavily flared to cover the STi's wider track, and an aggressive new front fascia feature features a deeper front spoiler.

The rear fenders and doors are also new, again to cover the car's wider track. A new, more aggressive rear fascia has been redesigned to accommodate the quad-outlet dual exhaust. The rear spoiler is as functional as one can be on a hatchback, but will not please fans of the current STi's massive spoiler.

The STi's dumpy styling lacks the visual flair of arch-rival Mitsubishi's next-generation Evolution X. But for Subaru fans, performance is probably more important that looks. Power is reputed to be in the 300 horsepower ballpark, close to that of Evo X.

Subaru will offer the STi only as a hatchback, with the vehicle arriving sometime in the middle of 2008 after making its debut at one of the many auto shows held in the early months of the year.
